Goal: To promote externally funded research and
sponsored programs at Fordham.
In the fall of 2004, the URC began a revision of Fordham's Internal Research Grants program. Our goals have been to increase the breadth of the applicant pool and the number of awards and to revise the terms of the award to make it better serve as an incubator to bring research projects to a stage wehere they can command outside funsing. Thanks to the generosity of the Academic Vice-President, Dr John Hollwitz, we were able to nearly double the number of awards in 2004 to 37. In the 2005 competition, we will be implementing several exciting changes, again made possible by the coooperation of Dr Hollwitz and his staff. First, the maximum award amount (unchanged on almost 2 decades) has been increased from $4,000 to $6,000. Second, proposals may now request supplementary funding for up to $10,000 for purchases of equipment, data or other services needed to seed new research. Third, the pool for the Research grants is being increased again to $200,000 so that these increased award limits do not require a corresponding reduction in the number of awards. This represents a doubling in the size of the award pool since 2004! Fourth, starting with next year's competition, we will inaugurate a follow-on competition in which awardees seeded in the prior year may request a course release to complete the preparation of the proposal to an outside granting agency. Further details about changes in the Faculty Research Grant program will be in the November 2005 ORSP Research Newsletter and the ORSP website continues to be the place to find copies of the revised Award Guidelines which include details on preparing applications, permitted forms of support and grant follow-up and reporting requirements, and for online copies of the Application Forms. Overview of the URC The University Research Council (URC) is a standing Presidential Committee whose charge is to "formulate University research policies and procedures" and report on these areas to the President. The Council's current projects include: a search new incentives for the development of grant proposals and of ways of easing the administrative burden of grantees; a review of the procedures for awarding Faculty Fellowships and Research Grant; revision of the University's intellectual property policies. Faculty who have comments or suggestions to offer on any of these projects or who wish to propose other topics for the URC's consideration are invited to contact Ian Morrison. The Recent Research Initiatives page describes several exciting policy changes designed to reward faculty active in obtaining outside funding. The other links take you to the website of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs; to a page of External research links on that site which links to resources for locating grant opportunities and to major grantor sites; and to InfoEd where you can use InfoEd's proprietary database to search for existing grant opportunities and be notified of new ones. The Research Grants page gives information on Fordham's internal grant program designed to help faculty, particularly junior faculty, initiate new research projects.
