MEN'S CREW

Men’s crew debuted as a club sport at Fordham in 1915. After a hiatus caused by World War I, crew resumed in 1957, beginning a half-century of successful competition. The team has competed at the IRA national championships, the Henley Royal Regatta and the San Diego Crew Classic. The focal point of the spring racing season is the Dad Vail Regatta, the largest collegiate regatta in the nation. Fordham men’s crews have captured medals at 9 of the last 10 Dad Vail Regattas in either the varsity lightweight eight or lightweight four, with three championships in the four, and two in the eight, most recently in 2008.

Coach Bonanno, in his 20th year at Fordham, has led the team to extraordinary success, winning medals each year at the Dad Vail and other major collegiate regattas. During his tenure, Fordham has had 10 undefeated crews and 16 national championships, ten at the Dad Vail, three at the ECAC National Invitational Collegiate Regatta, one at the Division-I national championships and one at the IRA Championship. In the off season, Coach Bonanno has run a senior national team development camp that produced numerous U.S. National and Canadian Henley championships. As a competitor, he participated on the US national team in the 1970s. Bonanno has also served as the head coach of the Puerto Rican, Guatemalan and Indian Olympic rowing teams. In the summers of 2007 and 2008, he directed a summer rowing program for the New York Rowing Association.

2007 Dad Vail Regatta Lightweight 4+ - Gold MedalistsIn the 2008 season, Fordham’s top men’s eight capped an undefeated regular season as a lightweight crew with a victory at the Dad Vail Regatta. Earlier in the season, the crew placed second as a heavyweight varsity eight at the Murphy Cup and also won the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Rowing Association and Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Crew championships. In addition to the varsity eight, the team also competed at the varsity level in lightweight and heavyweight fours. With four rowers from last year’s championship eight and seven from the fours returning, plus an incoming class including several outstanding high school oarsmen, Fordham men’s crew has a strong nucleus for the 2008-2009 season.

The 2008-2009 crew is led by senior captain Ryan Kirlin, who was named a first-team All-American by the American Collegiate Rowing Association. Andrew Leonardi ’08 was named to the second team. Kirlin, Leonardi and Dave Montani ’10, were invited to the selection camp for the Under-23 national team. Montani was selected for the team and stroked the US lightweight four in the U-23 World Championships this summer in Germany.

The team is divided into novice and varsity squads. The varsity squad is made up of upperclassmen and those freshmen who demonstrate an ability to compete at the varsity level. Novices include those who are new to the sport, and incoming freshmen with little experience. The novice squad’s head Coach is Andrew Haight, a three-time Dad Vail medallist at Fordham. He is assisted by Andrew Leonardi. No experience is required to join the crew. Many members of Fordham’s championship crews began their careers as novices at Fordham.
