Fordham University The Jesuit University of New York

Office of the Vice President for University Mission & Ministry

"Today our prime educational objective must be to form men and women for others; men and women who will live not for themselves but for God and his Christ - for the God-man who lived and died for all the world; men and women who cannot even conceive of love of God which does not include love for the least of their neighbors; men and women completely convinced that the love of God which does not issue in justice for men and women is a farce."

- Pedro Arrupe, S.J.,  July 31, 1973

Welcome to the Office of University Mission and Ministry at Fordham University. This Office helps to tie together or highlight programs at Fordham that demonstrate Fordham’s commitment to all four aspects of its University Mission: (1) as a University that fosters moral reflection and intellectual involvement with a world of cultural, intellectual and religious diversity; (2) as a Catholic University encouraging growth in faith both through its academic programs in theology and related subjects and
 Fr. Patrick Ryan, S.J.
through the liturgical and spiritual activities made possible by Campus Ministry; (3) as a Jesuit University committed to personal concern (cura personalis) for each and every student and staff member, urging all to strive for the greater glory of God both in the excellence of their life and work and in their commitment to justice and the service of others, especially the disadvantaged through the Community Service Program focused on local needs and the national and international immersion experiences of Global Outreach; (4) as a University in New York City, recognizing the unique importance of our location at the center of world business, communications and the arts as well as the opportunities for learning and service available through the United Nations and related agencies.

Grouped under this Office are Campus Ministry, Community Service and Global Outreach, each with its own Director. While these departments deal mainly with students, the programs that derive directly under the Office of the Vice President for University Mission and Ministry are more oriented toward faculty and staff, though other populations served include alumni/ae, students and Trustees.

In Christ,

Rev. Patrick Ryan, S.J.
Vice President for Mission and Ministry
