Service-Learning is coming to the Core. As it ramps up, students will be first asked, and later required, to take a Service Learning course in the Core.
What is Service-Learning?
Service-Learning is an academic program that allows students to earn credit by doing an internship in a community service organization in conjunction with their regular coursework. All placements in community service organizations are made by the Community Service Program (CSP).
There are two levels of Service Learning:
Level 1 - Interdiscplinary course in Service-Learning
The student initiates the 1-credit Service-Learning program through the Community Service Program office and then informs the professor teaching the 3-credit course to which they wish to attach the 1-credit program.
Requirements for the 1-credit program:
10% of the grade for the 1-credit comes from:
- The student performs 30 hours of community service in an organization recommended by the Community Service Program office.
- The students attends 5 guided reflection seminars run by the Community Service Program office.
- The student sends weekly email reflections to the Community Service Program office.
90% of the grade for the 1-credit comes from:
- The student writes 2 essays for the professor integrating the community service experience with the course.
Please note:
- 100% of the grade for the 3-credit course to which the 1-credit program is attached comes from the professor.
- The 1-credit Service Learning program, and the 3-credit course to which it is attached, have different course codes, and their grades must be registered SEPARATELY.
Level 2 - Service-Integrated Courses 3 or more credits
The professor works with the Community Service Program office to structure a course around Service Learning.
Requirements:
- Participation in Community Service Program office workshops to help faculty design the syllabus and assignments for their Service-Integrated course.
- ALL the students in the class are placed in internships by Community Service Program office and Service Learning is fully integrated into everyone’s work for the course.
Please note:
- Service-Integrated courses will be designated by the section code "SL" (for example, RSRU 1000-SL1).
